More information

Thank you for taking the time to explore my display. Below you will find more information related to weaving and helpful links to learn more. Feel free to also explore my website and learn more about my work.

What is weaving

At its most basic, weaving is interlacing two sets of yarn at right angles to each other to create a fabric. A simple over, under pattern creates most weaving structures! Check out Wikipedia to get the basics with the link below.

Weaving with kids

While weaving can be technical, it can also be simple. Plus it is joyful at both levels! There are so many ways to introduce kids to weaving, starting with basic paper weaving (think preschool project), progressing through cardboard and straw looms, to pin looms and zoom looms, and finally with tapestry or rigid heddle looms. The only limit is the extent of your imagination.

Styles of looms

While the basics of weaving are straightforward, there are numerous styles of looms that allow you to achieve this outcome in different manners. Some of the basics are inkle looms, tapestry looms, rigid heddle looms, floor looms, table looms, and backstrap looms. Follow the link below to learn a little more about each type from Handwoven Magazine.

Weaving resources to get started

Weaving is a huge category and can feel intimidating to start. However it is also very straightforward and one step feeds to the next. I started with a simple, homemade, cardboard loom, and grew from there. Gist Yarn has put together a series of blog posts if you are interested in learning more!

My schedule does not always allow for me to attend classes or workshops. Thus, most of what I have learned has come from helpful weaving books! The first time I looked at A Handweaver’s Pattern Book, it was from a Prospector search at my local library!

For what I cannot find at our library or what I want to own, The Woolery has a great selection of weaving books! Follow the link to browse their suggested books.
